Spanish zookeeper dies after he was hit by elephant's trunk

A Spanish zookeeper has died after he was hit by an elephant's trunk, according to the zoo and local authorities.

The zoo said the blow caused the 44-year-old man to hit his head against the bars of an enclosure at the Cabarceno Natural Park near Santander.

After the incident, the keeper was rushed to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

This is the first incident at the nature park in 31 years.

Police and park management said they have commenced an investigation into the death.

The park described the incident as a "sad day for the Cabárceno family" on Twitter on Wednesday.

Cabarceno Natural Park is home to more than 100 animal species from five continents.

It features many animals threatened with extinction, such as African elephants, Grévy's zebras and white rhinoceros.
