SA cops catch nine drug and drink drivers in school time blitz

South Australian police have nabbed six drivers under the influence of drugs while taking children to and from school yesterday in a one-day school time blitz.

Officers said they were "appalled" to detect six drug drivers and three drink drivers specifically with children in the car between the hours of 8am to 9am and 2:45pm to 3:45pm.

Among the offenders was a man dropping children off at school with a blood alcohol reading of 0.083, several drivers with children in the car testing positive to methylamphetamine and a 37-year-old woman from Loxton who returned a positive result to a combination of drugs while picking children up from school.

The blitz was a part of Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive, an ongoing effort from police to improve safety around key pick up and drop off times in the state.

In one day, across just two hours, police conducted 1,253 tests for alcohol and recorded three positive test results. A further 109 drug screening tests were performed, returning six positive results.

Two vehicles were impounded and one driver was issued with an immediate loss of license.

Superintendent Bob Gray, the officer in charge of SA's Traffic Services Branch, said the results showed a lack of regard on behalf of drivers for their passengers.

"These drivers have shown a complete lack of regard for the safety of themselves, their young passengers, other road users and pedestrians," Supt Gray said.

"Children and pedestrians have a right to feel safe in their school community and police regularly conduct these operations to ensure irresponsible, dangerous drivers are caught and penalised."
