Mother woke to the sound of screaming as son 'stabbed multiple times'

An elderly mother woke to the sound of screaming after her son was allegedly stabbed "multiple times" with a knife in a home invasion in Melbourne's south-west.

Victim Peter Gantidis, 53, has undergone surgery in hospital after allegedly being stabbed in the face, arms and chest by a female intruder in Williamstown this morning.

Police believe the unknown woman broke into the The Strand property through the back window just after 1.30am, when she was disrupted by the man.

Mr Gantidis heard the woman breaking in and confronted her in the hallway.

Hobsons Bay Detective Sergeant Mark Drane said an altercation occurred between the pair, which led to the woman stabbing him numerous times.

"A struggle has occurred between the two of them, which has led to him being stabbed a few times," he said.

"I'm not sure if he was trying to apprehend her at the time."

The man's elderly mother was sleeping upstairs, but woke to the sound of screaming as the aggravated burglary unfolded.

When she walked downstairs, she found her son critically injured and called police and family for help.

The woman fled the scene following the attack, with police urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity, has dashcam footage or CCTV to come forward.

"We are working as hard as we can to solve it ... hopefully we will arrest the offender as soon as possible," Sergeant Drane said.

"It would be daunting and scary for any of those people inside the house," Sergeant Drane said.

"The male occupant being woken, finding someone in his house would be traumatic for him and that's led to these other injuries."

Mr Gantidis is now in an induced coma at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, his devastated family holding a bedside vigil.

The family is well known in the Williamstown area, operating a popular river cruise company for decades.

Police have established a crime scene and closed The Strand between Mariner Street and Stanley Street while they investigate.

The female offender is described as Caucasian, aged in her 40s or older, with a solid build and long blonde hair.

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
