Melbourne hotel worker tests positive to UK virus strain

Melbourne's infected hotel quarantine worker has tested positive to the highly infectious UK variant of coronavirus, Premier Daniel Andrews has announced.

The woman, aged in her 50s, works in the Holiday Inn at Melbourne Airport as an authorised officer and returned a positive result for COVID-19 on Sunday.

"I can confirm that genomics have come in this morning in relation to the Holiday Inn case, confirming it is the UK strain," Mr Andrews said today.

Mr Andrews said eight primary social and family close contacts were in isolation, as well as 136 close contacts from work.

No test results of the close contacts have been returned yet.

"They're all isolating. They've all been tested. We are working through those."

The state has recorded zero cases of COVID-19 overnight, however a returned traveller in hotel quarantine has been rushed to hospital and remains in intensive care.

"We send our best wishes to that person and their family, and we again are reminded of the outstanding care that our health professionals provide to all of those who have been touched by this global pandemic," Mr Andrews said.

The premier described Victoria recording zero cases of coronavirus today as "very pleasing" given two hotel quarantine workers tested positive to COVID-19 in just four days.

More than 12,800 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours, with Mr Andrews urging more people to come forward for testing.

"I've said it a thousand times and will probably say it a thousand more - nothing is more important than getting tested as soon as you register even the mildest symptoms," he said.

"It's how we find cases. It's how we wrap a public health response around those people, their family and every family and it's how we stay safe and stay open."

More to come.
