Man killed, child injured in fiery crash

A man has died and a child has been hospitalised following a fiery crash north of Melbourne overnight.

The driver, aged in his 40s, was travelling on Sinclairs Road in Deanside with a 12-year-old boy, believed to be his son, when his Mercedes crashed into a power pole and caught fire about 9.25pm yesterday.

The man was trapped inside the burning wreck and died at the scene.

However, the boy managed to escape before the car became engulfed in flames.

He was taken to hospital, but the extent of his injuries are unknown.

Acting Sergeant Brimbank Highway Patrol Matt Moohan said the car lost control and collided with the power pole.

"We are investigating high speed being a factor in this collision," he said.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
