'Large gull' swoops off with man's tongue bitten off in street fight

A Scottish man who had his tongue bitten off in a violent street encounter watched as the chunk of flesh was taken by a seagull, a court has heard.

Bethany Ryan, 27, pleaded guilty in court last Thursday over the attack on James McKenzie in Edinburgh on August 1, 2019.

The pair were strangers, the court heard, but got into an argument after they encountered one another in the Scottish capital in August 2019, the Edinburgh News reported.

The Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told Ms Ryan initially tried to walk away, but that Mr McKenzie had grown aggressive, and approached her with a closed fist.

She then pushed herself against him, "kissed" him, and bit off a portion of his tongue.

Mr McKenzie spat the dismembered muscle onto the street, where a large seagull grabbed it and flew away.

Ms Ryan will be sentenced at a later date.
