Hundreds of litres of beer stolen from sunken ship

A group of brewers carrying out an audacious deep-sea experiment were left heartbroken after they discovered their stored barrels of beer had been stolen from their underwater hiding spot.

The Argentinian brewers, from Mar Del Plata, had stored 700 litres of strong dark ale attacked to a sunken Soviet-era ship on the ocean floor.

But the day before they were due to recover the ocean-aged beer, thieves absconded with the lot, the New York Times reported.

"I started crying," said Carlos Brelles, who runs the Thalassa Diving School in Mar del Plata.

"Three or four people without morals destroyed the work of so many people who put in so much effort."

Mr Brelles had initially suggested the idea to a friend, Heller Brewery co-owner Eduardo Ricardo, in 2018.

Other breweries in the city also came on board.

Preparation for the experiment took some time, not least due to interruptions from COVID-19, but finally the barrels were attached to the sunken ship in November last year.

They were due to be extracted last week, and blended with a lighter beer to make a special line.

The proceeds would have been donated to a natural science museum.

Brewer Juan Vincent told the Times that despite having so far got away with the beer, the thieves wouldn't be enjoying a party.

"If they stole it for their own consumption, they're going to have to throw it away," he said.

"It was a lukewarm, gasless liquor that would be very difficult to drink."

The breweries, and Mr Brelles, are determined to redo the experiment.
