Adelaide driver allegedly caught with hand-painted number plates

South Australian police have pulled over a man driving with hand-painted number plates on his car.

Police stopped a 26-year-old man in a Mitsubishi sedan just after 2am today in Elizabeth Vale in Adelaide's north for allegedly driving without lights.

"Police stopped the man and on closer examination, discovered the number plates had in fact been painted over and hand painted with different characters and a helpful message," a statement from South Australian Police said.

The Rosetown man was charged with driving while disqualified, driving with a defaced number plate, driving an unregistered and uninsured car and driving at night without lights.

He will be summonsed to appear in court "at a later date".
