Body of missing snorkeller found off waters of Melbourne beach

The body of a woman who disappeared while snorkelling at a beach in Melbourne's south-west has been found by rescue crews following a two-day search.

Search and rescue efforts ramped up for the missing 20-year-old woman today, after she vanished near Altona Pier on Saturday.

The Search and Rescue Squad found the woman's body in waters off the pier about 10.30am.

The Ashwood woman was snorkelling with a group of friends about 11.15am when she disappeared from sight at the weekend.

"Four of them went in and only three came out. We don't know what happened, it's just so scary for the parents," witness Sophie told 9News.

Conditions at the time were windy but the bay remained flat for most of the day, however after heavy rain on Friday, the murky waters have made the search difficult.

Victoria Police confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
