Snow falls in Tasmania as heatwave rolls over half the country

As half of Australia continues to labour under a heatwave and severe fire warnings, one part of this wide brown land is celebrating a white pre-Christmas.

Snow fell overnight and today around Great Lake in Tasmania, blanketing the ground and the trees.

Photos posted by the Great Lake Hotel on Facebook show what looks like a winter wonderland – despite the fact that it's Australia in December, just after the hottest November on record.

And meteorologist Glen Perrin, from the Bureau of Meteorology, told nine.com.au it was out of the norm.

"I'm not sure you'd say it's usual," he said.

"It's not especially low – say around 500m (above sea level), that would be very unusual."

Mr Perrin said the snow had fallen at about 800m at its lowest, but that limit had since risen.

"We're not expecting any more snow today," he said.

"None in the short term. Might see more next Monday, but there's a big question mark over that."

Temperatures in Tasmania have been ranging from the low teens to the early 20s – cool, Mr Perrin said, but not particularly cold for the season.
