Mystery benefactor pays off toy shop's entire lay-by balance

Parents on the Gold Coast have been overwhelmed after an anonymous woman paid off all the lay-bys at a toy store weeks before Christmas.

The unnamed woman came into Mr Toys Toyworld at Burleigh Waters and paid off the outstanding balances, totalling more than $16,000 and 80 lay-bys.

The woman came in with two friends, for the unexpected act of generosity.

ABC reports the trio were in their late 20s or early 30s.

The three later returned to give staff members gift cards and chocolate, and took another random shopper on a spree amounting to thousands of Christmas presents.

"They paid for his family's — what I'm assuming is — their entire Christmas shop … off the top of my head that was $3000-$4000," employee Maddie Gillespie told the ABC.

"We were all speechless — it was a really crazy moment."

Lay-bys allow shoppers to pay off an item in increments before they receive it.

It is particularly popular with toy sales around Christmas time.
