Five rescued after boat overturned in Sydney's north

Five people have been rescued off a beach in Sydney's north after the small boat they were in overturned.

Volunteers from Marine Rescue Cottage Point responded at about 10am today to an overturned vessel on the Hawkesbury River with three people on board.

Marine Rescue NSW said in a statement the small half cabin runabout overturned near Flint and Steel Point after travelling almost an hour from Mooney Mooney without bungs – referring to drain plugs.

A day out on Sydney water ends in a beach rescue.

"The skipper decided to beach the vessel as it was taking on water," the statement said.

"As it approached the beach, the five persons were flung into the water as the boat overturned.

"A passing boat assisted one of the five, with the other four making it safely to shore unassisted."

The overturned boat is towed to safety.

Marine Rescue NSW said the rescue is a reminder for skippers to check boat bungs are in before heading out on the water.

The rescued vessel has been towed, with all passengers safe and well.
