What the early results are showing in the crucial state of Florida

The crucial state of Florida is hanging in the balance, with the results expected to be called soon.

The last of the polling booths closed in the swing state at midday and so far Donald Trump appears to be pulling slightly ahead.

With about 90 percent of the votes counted, Mr Trump is ahead with 50.5 percent of the votes, to Joe Biden's 48.5.

Florida is a must win for Mr Trump. He essentially cannot win the election without Florida.

That state is also considered to be the easiest path to victory for Mr Biden.

If he doesn't take the state then there are other ways he can still become president, however, it will take much longer for the result to become clear.

The key state is showing swings to Mr Biden in major Republican voter bases as well as cities like Tampa and Jacksonville.

But in the critical Democratic bastion of Miami-Dade County, he appears to be seriously underperforming Hillary Clinton.

Ms Clinton lost the state by 1.2 percent in 2016.

Democrats and Republicans alike will be nervously waiting for results in central Florida like Orlando.

Going into the election, Mr Biden was slightly ahead in the polls with a one percentage point lead.

Mr Biden's polling was much better among senior citizens than Hillary Clinton was in 2016, with concerns over the president's handling over the coronavirus.

Meanwhile Mr Trump appeared to be doing better among Hispanics than he did four years ago.
