A day after the mysterious monolith in the Utah desert disappeared, a second similar object has appeared on a hillside in Romania.
The four-metre tall monolith is an upturned triangular prism, but from most angles simply appears as a flat plank.
It appeared on a hillside outside Piatra Neamt in the north of Romania, close to an important archaeological site.
Though while a dark metallic structure, it appears covered in concentric circles.
While the appearance of such monoliths have left many disconcerted and uneasy, local mayor Andrei Carabelea was unfazed.
"My guess is some cheeky and terrible alien teenagers left home with their parents' UFO and started planting metal monoliths around the world," he wrote on Facebook.
"First in Utah and then at Piatra Neamt. I am honoured that they chose our city."
But his ebullience was matched with a stern lament.
"I would have appreciated their bold gesture more if they followed the rules and followed the legal steps to obtain a building permit," he said.
He said he would be "tolerant of them" if the monolith attracts more tourists.
The monolith was erected mere metres away from the ancient fortress Petrodava.
Petrodava dates back to before the first century, and was mentioned in Ptolemy's Geography.
It was destroyed by the Romans in the second century.

Meanwhile, authorities in Utah say they will not investigate the disappearance of the first monolith, which was widely reported on last week.
The San Juan County Sheriff said the office doesn't have the resources to devote much time and energy to the object's apparent theft.
But they are accepting tips from anyone who knows who may have taken it.
The monolith was erected on public land without permission, and its creator or owner has not been identified.
"The exact location of the installation is not being disclosed since it is in a very remote area and if individuals were to attempt to visit the area, there is a significant possibility they may become stranded and require rescue," the Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
"We are encouraging anyone who knows the location of the monolith to not attempt to visit it due to road conditions."
But it did not take long for sightseers to track it down, with keen-eyed monolith-hunters spotting it on satellite imagery then calculating its GPS coordinates.
The satellite imagery revealed the monolith had been in the remote and rocky area since at least 2016.
The bureau said visitors parked vehicles on plants and left behind waste.
Some cars had to be towed after getting stuck in the remote area, a long way from bathrooms, mobile phone coverage or other amenities.
The three-metre tall object was spotted by state authorities who had been conducting a survey of bighorn sheep.
The monolith has been likened to the mysterious object in 2001: A Space Odyssey, which plays an ominous and viral role in the book and film.
In the sci-fi classic, the appearance of a giant metallic rectangle in prehistoric Africa wordlessly motivates a troop of apes to develop human-like behaviour.
The insinuation is the monolith drives animals to a new stage of evolution.
