Man who allegedly grabbed and tried to choke woman wanted

A man who allegedly grabbed a woman from behind before attempting to choke her on a street in Melbourne's east is wanted by police.

Sexual Crime Squad detectives are hunting the man following the alleged assault in Hawthorn last week.

The 25-year-old woman was walking along Glenferrie Road about 12.50am on Sunday, when she became aware of a man following her.

She crossed Glenferrie Road and then walked along Burwood Road, calling a friend to say she was being followed.

The man drove slowly behind the woman before driving past her and parking on the road about 1.09am.

The man then grabbed the woman from behind at 1.13am and attempted to drag her down Henry Street.

"The woman struggled and elbowed the man to the stomach," Leading Senior Constable Natalie Dean said.

"He attempted to choke the woman before she was able to bite him on the arm."

The man let go of the woman and fled down the street.

Two nearby witnesses heard the woman scream and followed the man into the Central Gardens.

They confronted the man before he threatened to assault them.

"The man then ran back towards Williams Street before he was captured on CCTV returning to his vehicle at 1.21am," Constable Dean said.

The man is described as being about 183cm tall with a heavy build and a pot belly.

He had short brown hair with a receding hair line and was wearing a black ski mask covering his face, jeans and a dark coloured t-shirt with a motif on the front.

Detectives have scoured through CCTV and will later release footage of a man they would like to speak to in relation to the incident.

Police have urged anyone who recognises the man or his vehicle, remembers seeing him in the area on the night, or has dash cam footage to come forward.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
