Joe Biden has received more votes than any other presidential nominee in US history as a growing population and a resurgence in voting participation see an influx of votes for both candidates.
Biden is yet to win the election but is leading current US President Donald Trump in the popular vote – that is the sheer one-for-one votes for either the Democrats or the Republicans.
At last count (10am AEDT), Joe Biden had amassed more than 70.8 million votes, compared to 68.2 million votes for Donald Trump.

Biden's current total outstrips that of the previous record holder Barack Obama, who in 2008 amassed almost 69.5 million votes.
Unlike Australia, voting is not compulsory in the United States and participation rates can vary widely.
Also confusingly, the candidate that wins the popular vote is not guaranteed to secure the presidency.

Rather, a candidate must win electoral college seats, which are generally assigned based on the population of any one voting state.
In 2016 Donald Trump won the presidency with 62.9 million votes, despite being behind on the popular vote to rival Hillary Clinton who won 65.8 million votes.
Votes are still being counted in the US and the current totals for both Joe Biden and Donald Trump will rise as time passes.
