Second 'untouchable' woman dies from gang rape in Indian province on same day

A second Indian woman has died after being allegedly gang raped on the same day a 19-year-old died in similar circumstances in the same province.

The 22-year-old suffered severe injuries and died on the way to hospital in the city of Balrampur in Uttah Pradesh.

"A complaint was filed by the brother that two accused in the case, Shahid and Sahil, raped the woman and then, when her condition became serious, they sent her home on a rickshaw," senior police officer Dev Ranjan Verma said.

"The relatives says she died on the way to hospital.

"The police have registered a case of murder and gang rape and both accused have been arrested and are being jailed."

Protests erupted over the death of a 19-year-old who was allegedly gang raped and murdered in Uttar Pradesh.

Her family said she was on the way to secure a college admission when she was abducted.

"My daughter wanted to become a lawyer but she was killed. The same fate should await the culprits," her mother said. "We want justice."

She died on the same day as a 19-year-old woman, also from Uttah Pradesh, who had also been gang-raped.

Both women were part of the Dalit, or "untouchable" caste.

Four men from an upper caste have been arrested over the rape and murder of the 19-year-old.

The woman was allegedly attacked while working on a farm in Hathras.

Her family found her naked, bleeding, paralysed from a broken spine and with a split tongue outside her home on September 14.

She identified her alleged attackers before her death.

Her death has sparked mass protests across India, with demonstrators demanding an end to sexual violence.

Hundreds of protesters surrounded the hospital in New Delhi where the young woman died, demanding the perpetrators be hanged.

India's opposition Congress party leaders, Rahul Gandhi, center and his sister Priyanka Gandhi stand after they are stopped by police on a highway in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.

Yesterday opposition party leaders and siblings Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi were detained by police when they tried to visit the village where the 19-year-old had lived.

Former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav demanded action while accusing the government of covering up the Hathras case.

"After Hathras, another gang rape incident has surfaced in Balrampur in which the woman died after torture," he tweeted.

"The BJP government should not attempt a cover up here like Hathras and should take immediate action against the culprits."

Their visit purportedly violated an order banned gatherings of more than four people in the area to prevent any more protests.

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous country subdivision in the world, with a population of more than 200 million.

If it were its own country, it would be the eighth largest nation in the world.

The gang rape and killing of the woman from the lowest rung of India's caste system has sparked outrage across the country.

Last month a 13-year-old Dalit girl was raped and killed in Uttar Pradesh.

Last year a 23-year-old Dalit woman was set on fire and killed by a gang of men as she went to a courthouse to press rape charges.

A rape is committed in India every 15 minutes.

Sexual violence has become a serious political issue in India following the 2012 gang rape and killing of student on a New Delhi bus.

Mass protests after her death prompted the creation of fast-track courts to clear out the backlogged legal system.

The men responsible for the 2012 bus attack were hanged in March this year.
