The body of a young kayaker who went missing off the coast of Hobart yesterday has been found washed up onto a nearby beach, dashing hopes he may be found alive.
Valentine Bester, 19, was reported missing by his friends at 5.30pm yesterday after setting off from the Lauderdale Yacht Club at Roches Beach, east of Hobart, at 11am.
His body was found by a member of the public near the boat ramp at Slopen Main, on the other side of the bay, this morning.
Authorities say Mr Bester may had been trying to travel across an ocean opening to Lime Bay by following the Seven Mile Beach and Carlton Beach coastline in his green sit-on-top kayak.
Police, Surf Life Saving Tasmania and Didges Ferry Marine Rescue Services launched a huge air and sea search covering greater Fredrick Henry Bay which ran into the early hours of this morning and resumed at first light.
The search continues today to find the teenager's missing kayak.
"Our thoughts are with Valentine's family and loved ones at this difficult time," Tasmania Police's Acting Inspector Michael Foster said.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
