Footage shows moments after baby was found in a bin at Doha Airport

Surveillance footage showing the moments following the shocking discovery of an abandoned baby in a bin at a Qatari airport has been released.

A newborn premature baby was found in a terminal bathroom at Hamad International Airport on October 2.

After the discovery, a group of women from 10 different aircraft at the airport were subject to invasive internal searches. Eighteen Australians were involved, as well as women from other nations.

CCTV footage, published by Doha News today, shows a man cradling the newborn after it was found, as his colleagues gather around him.

The baby is wrapped in something blue, and the employees appear to be discussing the situation as one continues to hold the newborn.

"A newborn infant was found in a trash can, concealed in a plastic bag and buried under garbage, at Hamad International Airport (HIA)," the Qatari government said in a statement yesterday.

"The baby girl was rescued from what appeared to be a shocking and appalling attempt to kill her."

Foreign Minister Marise Payne told a parliamentary hearing yesterday the matter is still under investigation.

"The matters which are being discussed in relation to this matter are very concerning and very distributing and the Australian government has been clear about that," Ms Payne said.

It is also understood there were a number of women of other nationalities involved.

Ms Payne has declined to provide details about the other women involved due to privacy concerns.

However, the UK has confirmed that two British women were taken off the planes and said formally expressed concern.

The infant discovered at the airport survived and is now under medical care in Doha.

In Qatar, it is illegal to have sex or become pregnant if you are unmarried, and it is punishable by jail. This is based on Islamic legal tradition.
