The woman suffered possible leg fractures and was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment. Luckily, the child was not seriously harmed, suffering minor scratches.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 32-year-old woman, was treated at the scene for minor injuries before being taken to the same hospital.

Police are investigating reports there was a male passenger in the Volkswagen.

Videos of the scene show the car on the beach at the base of a large cliff as a crowd of witnesses gather near the scene.

Police commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and a retrieval operation is underway to remove the car from the beach.
