Tony Abbott appointed to top UK trade job

Former prime minister Tony Abbott has been picked to be Britain's joint president of the Board of Trade.

Mr Abbott, who led Australia from 2013 to 2015 and is a strong Brexit supporter, will be given responsibility for sealing trade deals for UK companies around the world, the Telegraph reports.

British politicians and business figures usually head the Board of Trade. Its goal is to "champion exports and inward and outward investment to deliver economic growth and prosperity".

The appointment of Mr Abbott is part of an effort to champion the British economy around the globe after Brexit.

Last year Mr Abbott said Britain should not worry about a no-deal exit from the European Union.

"Let me reassure anyone in Britain, anxious about the prospect of no deal, that Australia does one hundred billion dollars' worth of trade with the EU every single year, on this very basis," he said.

The UK Government is giving business chiefs and farmers a greater say in negotiations over post-Brexit trade talks.

It comes as Britain ramps up negotiations for potential deals with the US, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
