New 'disturbance' at correctional centre after multiple fires lit overnight

A "disturbance" at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, west of Brisbane, has seen debris strewn outside the building and prisoners displaying signs protesting COVID-19 lockdowns.

9News understands some inmates had broken out of their cells.

One green flag seen displayed outside the building read: "(No) COVID. FTS."

Emergency services responded to reports a fire had been lit on a mattress inside a cell and treated a number of inmates at midday yesterday.

Five fire crews were then called back to the facility on Ipswich Road in Darra, south-west of Brisbane, about 10pm yesterday to quell "a small rubbish fire" outside a building at the centre.

The second fire took crews three hours to contain.

All prisons from the NSW border to Rockhampton, including Arthur Gorrie, are in lockdown under stage four restrictions because of the risk of coronavirus.
