Man to fight manslaughter charge over nursing home death

A man charged over the death of an elderly woman at a Canberra nursing home has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Mario Amato, 60, entered a plea to the fresh charge in the ACT Magistrate's court this morning, having previously been charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Police allege the victim, Sheila Marie Capper, 89, was assaulted by Mr Amato, who was also a resident of the aged care facility in Campbell, in November 2018.

The woman suffered multiple injuries including a fractured hip. She was taken to hospital by paramedics, where she died in December that year.

Mr Amato was arrested in March, but is currently on bail. The case will return to court in September.
