Melbourne suburbs lockdown: Everything you need to know

Hundreds of thousands of residents across 36 suburbs in Melbourne will be forced into lockdown to tackle Victoria's worsening coronavirus crisis.

From midnight, more than 300,000 residents will go into lockdown, with stage three restrictions coming into effect until at least July 29 across 10 postcodes in the city's north and north-west.

Residents in the 10 restricted postcodes will not be allowed to leave their homes unless it is for the four reasons permitted under the Chief Health Officer's directives.

Here are some of the things you can and can't do if you live in a restricted area:

Can residents living in a lockdown area go on holiday?

No, if you're a resident living in a lockdown area and haven't left for your holiday by 11.59pm today you cannot go. However, if you live in a restricted postcode and are currently on holidays or leave before that cut off time, you may continue your trip as planned.

From the start of the directions, people living in a restricted postcode are required to stay at home except for the four reasons (shopping for necessary goods or services, care or compassionate reasons, exercise, and work and study) and will not be permitted to leave home for the purposes of a holiday.

Can I attend a funeral or a wedding outside of my area if I live in a restricted postcode?

You may travel outside of a restricted postcode to attend a wedding or funeral, noting that the location of the wedding or funeral determines what restrictions apply.

You should never attend a wedding or funeral if unwell. And if you are in a restricted postcode you should consider having a coronavirus test before attending such an event, wear a mask and ensuring that you practice physical distancing at the event.

Weddings in a restricted postcode will be restricted to five people (the couple, two witnesses and the celebrant). You can travel to a wedding outside an impacted area.

Funerals held in a restricted postcode will be restricted to 10 people plus those required to conduct the funeral. You can travel to a funeral outside a hotspot.

A wedding or funeral held in a private residence outside of a restricted postcode will be limited to five visitors, plus the celebrant.

Religious services and private worship will need to be streamed online as places of worship will be closed in restricted postcodes except to hold weddings, funerals or public services such as foodbanks.

Can I buy groceries or go to work if I live in a restricted postcode?

The restrictions will not prevent you from leaving your area. However, if you live in a restricted postcode, you are required to stay at home except for four reasons – shopping for necessary goods or services, care or compassionate reasons, exercise, and work and study (if you cannot work or study from home). Wherever possible, residents should limit their movement and ensure their activities are close to home.

Can I exercise with someone who is not part of my household if I live in a restricted postcode?

If you live in an impacted area, you can only exercise with one other person, or members of your household. This applies even if you leave a restricted postcode to exercise.

Can tradespeople come into my home?

Tradespeople are able to visit your home if required.

Can I undertake recreational activities like fishing or golf if I live in an impacted area?

No. If you live in a restricted postcode, there are only four reasons to be out (shopping for necessary goods or services, care or compassionate reasons, exercise, and work and study if you cannot work or study from home).

I don't live in a restricted postcode – can I travel into a restricted postcode to buy food or groceries?

Shopping for necessary goods or services, such as food or groceries, is one of the four reasons to travel to a restricted postcode.

I don't live in a restricted postcode – can I travel into a restricted postcode to visit friends or family?

If you don't live in a restricted postcode then you can only travel into a restricted postcode for one of the four reasons – shopping for necessary goods or services, care or compassionate reasons, exercise and work and study – or in order to reach another area.

Can I visit friends or family if I live in a restricted postcode?

You cannot visit friends and family who live at another household or have visitors to your home. The exception to this is if you are providing caregiving or visiting for compassionate reasons, providing a service or for work purposes. Victorians also cannot visit friends and family who live in a restricted postcode.

My partner and I live separately from one another - and I live in a restricted postcode. Can we still see each other?

Partners living separately are able to visit each other at home. While they are visiting you in a restricted postcode, they must abide by the restrictions and can only leave your home for one of the four reasons.
