A school in Melbourne's north has shut down after a student tested positive to coronavirus.
Newbury Primary School in Craigieburn will undergo cleaning today after the prep student was diagnosed with COVID-19 yesterday.
Affected students, their families and staff were being contacted, including those who were in close proximity with the infected student.
Students will have to learn from home today until the school reopens, which is likely to be on Monday.
In an email sent to parents – and seen by 9news.com.au – principal Michelle Bromfield said the Department of Health and Human Services had been in contact to notify them of the diagnosis.
"All students and teachers currently learning and working onsite are advised to remain at home while contact tracing occurs," Ms Bromfield wrote.
"They must limit movements to home-based activities and not attend public places.
"I understand this news will be concerning for many of you.
"I want to assure you we are doing everything we can to contain and slow the spread of the virus and ensure the health and safety of our whole school community."
Victoria's Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said the student attended school last Friday while infectious, before they developed symptoms over the weekend.
Prof. Sutton stressed the infection was not a result of an outbreak at the school.
"This is not transmission within the school," he said.
"The risk of transmission in the school is very low."
The state has recorded three new cases of coronavirus, taking Victoria's total to 1681 infections. Aside from the student, the remaining two cases were overseas travellers in hotel quarantine.
There have been 178 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state that have been acquired through unknown transmission.
Seven people are in hospital, including one patient in intensive care.
Prof. Sutton said community transmission seemed to be "concentrated" to the inner-north and west of Melbourne.
"The recent cases illustrate there really is ongoing community transmission in Victoria.
"These areas of Melbourne appear to be the hotspots."
