Sword-wielding man who carjacked Queensland mum jailed

A Queensland man who carjacked a mum-of-two while brandishing a long sword and axe has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Joshua Shawn Fairbrother yelled at the woman to remove her children - aged five and two - from the parked car on March 6 last year in Chermside West, north of Brisbane.

The 25-year-old stole the vehicle during a two-day drug-fuelled crime spree.

Earlier, Fairbrother broke into a Sherwood home, using a kitchen knife to threaten a couple and their two grandchildren.

He demanded a wallet and said he would "be back again" before fleeing.

Police smashed a car window to arrest Fairbrother when he refused to get out of the vehicle after a pursuit.

The father-of-three pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court today to a string of offences committed in February and March last year.

Judge Jennifer Rosengren handed Fairbrother a head sentence of five years' jail.

She ordered he be eligible for parole on November 7.
