Second earthquake hits New Zealand

A second moderate earthquake has struck New Zealand in as many days.

Thousands of Kiwis were rattled by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday around 12.30pm local time.

The epicentre was in the same part of the sea as Monday's 5.8 magnitude tremor.

New Zealand has had two earthquakes in as many days.

Both were 30 kilometres northwest of Levin, around 100 kilometres north of Wellington.

Monday's earthquake came as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave a live interview.

"We're having a bit of an earthquake here," Ms Ardern said in an early morning interview with Newshub's AM Show from Parliament.

"Quite a decent shake here… if you see things moving behind here."

Once the earthquake stopped, Ms Ardern calmly carried on with the interview saying she was in a "structurally sound place".

New Zealand lies on the seismically active "Ring of Fire", a 40,000km arc of volcanoes and ocean trenches girdling much of the Pacific Ocean.
