Japan will not pay for holidaymakers to visit for free.
Aussies won't be getting a free trip to the nation, despite reports the country would stump up cash towards half of the cost of airfares to boost tourism amid the pandemic recovery amid a multi-billion dollar campaign.
Japan Tourism Agency dashed the free holiday hopes, confirming on Twitter the offer is for domestic travellers only.
"Regarding reports by some news outlets that the Japanese government is considering a campaign to help foreign tourists visiting Japan by offering support for half of their travel expenses, please note that the Go to Travel Campaign under consideration by the Japanese government is to stimulate domestic travel demand within Japan after the Covid-19 pandemic and only cover a portion of domestic travel expenses, "it said.
