School runs in Sydney and Brisbane are more congested and chaotic than ever, as parents keep their kids away from coronavirus risks on public transport and drive them to class.
New data provided exclusively to Nine.com.au has revealed the impact on road traffic as both states returned to fulltime face-to-face teaching last week.
The fresh data also showed how road congestion levels at the traditional 5pm rush hour were on some days a whopping 50 per cent less than at the same time in previous years.
Figures from global traffic data supplier TomTom showed Sydney drivers last week faced slightly heavier congestion during the morning school runs.
Brisbane residents, however, struck far more traffic than usual compared to data on the same day in 2019 and 2018.
The morning school run in Brisbane was often up to 50 per cent more congested, as parents followed state government advice to avoid public transport.
School pick-ups at 3pm in Sydney and Brisbane were both marginally more congested than usual, as parents ran the gauntlet and collected kids from the gate.
The TomTom data also appeared to indicate just how many Australians are continuing to work from home.
Traffic between 5pm and 6pm on Sydney and Brisbane roads was often down by half last week, compared to 2019 and 2018 data.
Australian companies are working out how to safely bring workers back in to the office, after months of working from home during the worst of the pandemic.
Businesses are expected to stagger workers on a rotation system.
In NSW, public transport capacity has been slashed, leaving experts concerned about impending gridlock on Sydney's roads.
The latest NSW Transport figures showed the number of people riding buses and trains in April was down by around 80 per cent.
